Kolkata: Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan proved why they are one of the contenders for the Calcutta Football League title this year after they outplayed Tollygunge Agragami 2-0 at home to win all their five games so far.
Courtesy this win, the Mariners are joint table toppers with 15 points from five games, along with arch-rivals East Bengal, who has a better goal difference.
Unlike all the other matches that they’ve played so far, this one wasn’t going to be easy especially with the presence of a quality striker in the form of Anthony Wolfe in Subhash Bhowmik’s Tollygunge side. But the Green and Maroon brigade riding on goals by Kromah and Nikhil Kadam won the game to extend their unbeaten run in the competition so far.
The deadlock was broken as early as in the 16th minute when Mohun Bagan’s Liberian recruit Kromah netted a goal through a beautiful volley that sent the crowds into a frenzy.
Just as it looked as if it was Mohun Bagan’s game all the way from here on, Anthony Wolfe, who had been kept out of action for some time almost equalised for his team but a header from Kingshuk Debnath prevented any damage and helped the Mariners retain the lead going into the break.
The next goal for Mohun Bagan came towards the end in the 86th minute when Nikhil Kadam headed one in as the keeper had no chance of preventing a goal. Tollygunge nonetheless kept attempting shots on target hoping for a goal and nearly succeeded in the 91st minute but Bagan goalkeeper Shibinraj did well to punch the ball away.
The match thus ended 2-0 in the favour of the Green and Maroon brigade who gave a perfect birthday gift to one of the legendary figures of the club- Jose Ramirez Barreto who was present at the ground.
Also, the people who couldn’t make it inside the stadium to watch the live action, did so outside the ground on a huge screen, which was organised and put in place by the fans of Mohun Bagan.
