Albert Ramos Viñolas’ Birthday
January 17, 2020 All day
On 17th of January was born one of the best Spanish players of the last decade Albert Ramos Viñolas. The Spaniard has been one of the regular features of the top 20 in last 3 years and also climbed a highest career ranking of World Number 17 after he was able to reach the final of the Monte Carlo Masters 2017.
This was the most successful big tournament of Viñolas’ career where he defeated even the then World Number 1 Andy Murray. Viñolas was just one match away from grabbing the title only to suffer defeat at the hands of the King of Clay Rafael Nadal.
Ramos Viñolas entered the Monte Carlo Masters 2017 as the 15th seed. He had a tricky draw but was able to get through the 1st and 2nd round with comparative ease. In the two matches he defeated two Argentine players Renzo Olvio and Carlos Alberto.
In the 3rd round Ramos Viñolas met his most formidable opponent so far in World Number 1 Andy Murray. Murray won the 1st set and seemed cruising but Viñolas was able to fight back with a lot of valour. The Spaniard raised his game in the 2nd set to take it 6-2 and then broke in the closing stages of the 3rd set to avoid a tie breaker and take the set 7-5 and also the match.

In the Quarterfinal Ramos Viñolas faced another top 10 opponent in the then World Number 5 Marin Cilic of Croatia. The match went to 3 sets with the Spaniard winning the 1st and the 3rd set but with a convincing score line of 6-2 and 6-2. He was now a Masters 1000 semi-finalist.
In the semis Viñolas had to face another formidable opponent in the 11th seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille. The Spaniard again needed 3 sets but was able to get through the match and thus enter his 1st ever Masters 1000 final tournament.
In the final he had to face fellow countryman Rafa Nadal who was looking for a history making 10th Monte Carlo title. That day Rafa would prove too much for Viñolas who finished 2nd best and had to be contented with a finalist trophy at the Monte Carlo country club. That tournament was the most successful in Ramos Viñolas‘ career. It propelled his ATP ranking to a career high of World Number 17.
