Kolkata: The mutilated body of a 25-year-old local footballer was found on the railway tracks near the Sreerampore railway station in Hooghly district, reported the police on Sunday.
The name of the deceased happens to be Snehashish Dasgupta, who was a Kolkata Port Trust goalkeeper.
“Snehashish Dasgupta’s mutilated body was recovered on the railway tracks near Serampore on Saturday. He used to be a goalkeeper for Kolkata Port Trust,” the local police confirmed.
As reported by the Hindustan Times, he had gone out with some of his friends on September 29 and was drunk when he returned. He went out for a second time in the same night, but this time he did not return.
Dasgupta had been with the Kolkata Port Trust club for the past two seasons participating in the Calcutta Football League 1st Division and the third tier of the local league structure.
The victim’s family lodged a complaint with the Sreerampore police station alleging a murder. However the police are yet to confirm whether it was a murder or an accidental death.
They (family members) also informed the police that Snehashish had an heated exchange with his friends after he returned at around 1:30 a.m. but they were unaware about the reason behind the argument.
The family also accused his friends of being Dasgupta up around 2:30 a.m. in the same night until local people came to the rescue. Snehashish had been advised by the locals to remain in his house.
However, he had gone missing from the same night and the next day his body was found, by the police.
The police on searching his house found a blood stained shirt and also stains of blood were seen on walls of the victims’ room, reported Millenniumpost.
“We have detained three persons for interrogation,” said Kamnashish Sen, Assistant Commissioner of Police – II of the Chandernagore Police Commissionerate.
