Kolkata: Finally, the air is cleared on the threat letter sent to former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The Prince of Calcutta is heaving a sigh of relief with the news that a person named, Nirmalya Samanta has been arrested after a prolonged investigation by the West Bengal cops.
Ganguly, considered by many to be the next Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president had received a letter telling him to stay away from attending a programme under the aegis of Vidyasagar University on January 19 in Midnapore. Samanta was apprehended in the West Midnapore district, according to PTI.
The former Indian skipper had lodged a complaint with the Kolkata Police which contacted its Midnapore colleagues to probe into the matter. According to PTI, Samanta was pushed by some people at a tea stall to write to Ganguly on on January 5. The cops are supposed to investigate the matter and question the stall owners to unravel the truth.
Now, Ganguly is in the news for various other reasons as well. There are stories doing the rounds that he may take over as the next BCCI chief though there are question marks over his appointment. The Lodha Commission entrusted with the responsibility to clean up affairs in the BCCI clarifies that Ganguly is not eligible to take the hot seat. But inside sources say that calculations out of the blue might make him the next BCCI president though briefly. Now, the second most successful Indian captain is in the news for reasons he himself may not have thought of.
But a little birdie says it’s not Ganguly, but another legendary cricketer who may step in as the BCCI chief at this crucial juncture. He is the man who taught Indian batsmen how to take on challenges at a time when abject surrender was a common phenomenon. The former cricketer stood up to tall asks despite not being tall enough.
Keep guessing!
