Newcastle had taken a shock lead at Old Trafford after a defensive error from United center-back Rio Ferdinand. But boss Alex Ferguson didn’t have to be fuming for long as Rooney unleashed what was “one of the shots of the season” to beat Shay Hope at the goal. The goal came off an uncleared ball from the Newcastle defense that fell kindly for the England striker.

A moment of brilliance, the goal that made Wayne Rooney the youngest scorer in Premier League history at just 16 years old, he scored within 10 minutes of coming on as a substitute against Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles squad of the year before. The goal made Goodison Park go crazy as they knew that a star had arrived from their academy ranks. Unfortunately for them, Rooney was prized away to Manchester United just a year later.
