Today we bring you close to legendary 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins. The ICC Trophies include the Cricket World Cups, ICC Champions Trophy and post 2007, ICC T20 World Cups. These three tournaments have been the top priority tournaments for players and teams; so much that we have seen some extraordinary performances and upsets in these tournaments. Here we talk about 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins:
5. AB de Villiers
Former South African Cricket team captain Abraham Benjamin de Villiers captained his team during 2012–2017 and led the team into 103 ODI matches. His team won 59 while lost 39 out of these matches, giving AB a good 60 percent success as a captain; de Villiers in T20I captained for 18 matches winning 8 & losing 9 of these.
AB, thus, got himself among the best captains his team had, but one thing he also couldn’t get in his career, i.e. ICC Trophy win. He captained the team in one Cricket World Cup (2015). In this edition, his team managed to reach semifinal, only to lose it to eventual runners up New Zealand. The other ICC Trophy, ABD led his team into was ICC Knockout Trophy in 2013, & 2017, with the Proteas team reaching semifinal in 2013 where they lost to eventual runners up England.
Another ICC Trophy, de Villiers led his team into was the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012 where the team couldn’t even make to the semifinals. With this record in ICC tournaments, AB de Villiers made to the unremarkable list of 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins.
4. Viv Richards
Former West Indies Cricket team captain Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards captained his team during 1980–1991 and led the team into 105 ODI matches. His team won 67 while they lost 36 out of these matches, giving Richards a good 64 percent success as a captain.
Viv Richards, thus, got himself among the best captains West Indies had, but one thing he also couldn’t get in his career, i.e. ICC Trophy win. Richards captained his team in just one Cricket World Cup (1987), and the team couldn’t even reach the semifinal stage of this tournament. With this, Viv Richards made to the cliched list of 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins.
3. Mahela Jayawardene
Former Sri Lankan Cricket team captain Denagamage Praboth Mahela de Silva Jayawardene captained his team during 2004–2013 and led the team into 126 ODI matches, won 68 while lost 49 out of these matches giving Mahela a good 54 percent success as a captain; he’d win 12 matches for his team & lost 6 out of 19 T20I matches he led the team into.
Mahela, thus, got himself among the best captains Sri Lanka had, but one thing he couldn’t get in his career, i.e. an ICC Trophy win. Jayawardene captained his team in just one Cricket World Cup (2007) and they finished runners up in the tournament. Mahela led Sri Lanka into ICC Knockout Trophy in 2006 but couldn’t even make to the semifinals. He would captain his team into two ICC T20 World Cup editions (2007 & 2012) and would finish runners up in 2012. With this, Mahela Jayawardene made to the cliched list of 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins.
2. Mohammad Azharuddin
Former Indian Cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin captained India between 1989 & 1999 and led the team into 174 ODI matches. Indian Cricket team won 90 out of these matches while they lost 76 giving Azhar a good 53 percent success as a captain, decimals below Kapil Dev who had won the most matches as captain before Azhar.
Azhar, thus, got himself among the best captains India had, but one thing he couldn’t get in his career, i.e. ICC Trophy win. Azhar captained India in 3 Cricket World Cup (1992, 1996 & 1999). In these three editions, Indian Cricket team managed to reach semifinals in one (1996), only to lose it by default after a crowd misbehavior getting the match ruled in favor of eventual champions.
The only other ICC Trophy, Azhar led India into was the inaugural ICC Knockout Trophy in 1998. Indian cricket team made to the semifinal of this tournament, only to lose it to eventual runners up West Indies. With this forgettable record in ICC tournaments, Azhar made to the list of 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins.
1. Graeme Smith
Former Proteas Cricket team captain Graeme Craig Smith would also be part of the list featuring the 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins. Smith captained South Africa during 2003–2011 and led the team into 149 ODI matches. South African Cricket team won 92 out of these matches while they lost 51 giving Smith a good 64 percent success as a captain. In T20I cricket, Smith would captain South Africa in 27 matches winning 18 & losing 9.
Graeme Smith, thus, got himself among the best captains his team had, but one thing he couldn’t get in his career, i.e. ICC Trophy win. Smith captained his team in 2 Cricket World Cup (2007 & 2011). In these two editions, his team managed to reach semifinals in one (2007), only to lose it to eventual champions Australia by 7 Wickets. The other ICC Trophy, Smith led his team into was ICC Knockout Trophy in 2004, 2006 & 2009, with the Proteas team reaching semifinals in 2006 where they lost to eventual runners up West Indies.
Another ICC Trophy, Smith led South Africa into was the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, 2009 & 2010, reaching the semifinal once in 2009 where his team lost to eventual champions Pakistan. With this, Graeme Smith made to the unfortunate list of 5 Captains without ICC Trophy wins.
