Mumbai: Pakistani all rounder Azhar Mahmood was appointed as the national cricket team’s bowling coach for a span of two years on Wednesday and his duty to commence with the first Test of the New Zealand tour on November 17.
After being the temporary replacement for Mushtaq Ahmed for the Asia Cup in February 2016, he soon started working along with Mushtaq during the International Cricket Council (ICC) World T20, says a espncricinfo report.
He subsequently surfaced during the limited-overs series against England in August. These stints were of short term because Mahmood was contracted as a player with English county club Surrey until July 2016.
He was united with the Pakistani team in Sarjah, where they were playing the third and final Test against West Indies.
Pakistan has been without a bowling coach since the England tour ended. PCB since, were deliberating over many candidates and finally chose Mahmood.
Even though he has limited international coaching, a lot can be imbibed from him with his rich experience as a T20 specialist playing for domestic teams in Pakistan and England, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand and the West Indies.
Pakistan leaves for New Zealand on November 4 and will play two tests against the Kiwis in Christchurch and Hamilton.
