It was the first grand slam appearance of Sania Mirza with her new partner Barbora Strycova after the splitting with Martina Hingis and the result is disappointing. The world no.7 pair was beaten by top seeds Caroline Garcia and Kristina Maldenovic in the women’s doubles quarter-finals of the US Open by 6-7 (3), 1-6. This will be the end of India’s campaign in the last grand slam of the year.
After the loss of Rohan Bopanna in mixed doubles quarters match on Monday with his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski, it was Sania who was carrying the Indian hopes alone. The French pair of Caroline and Kristina were down by 1-4 when they fought to take the set at tie-break and win it by three points to zero. After that it was no consolidation efforts by Sania and her new partner which made the match one sided in second set.
The Indo-Czech pair received two break points to close the first set but the blow from the French pair was even harder. It was gracious efforts by Gracia that made the match leveled at 5-5. With the score of 6-6 the match went into tie-break where the Indo-Czech pair were not able to hold their nerves and lost the first set and second also.
The drizzle could have broken the momentum of top seeded French pair but it was other way round. The top seed hardly looked hassled when they came back to play the second set with commanding lead of 4-0. From there it was just few more minutes and the Indian hopes at US Open were over. Now there is wait for another year to hear the roar of Sania on court.
