In the sixth edition of our Tokyo 2021 Summer Games series; today we talk about Sajan Prakash, the Indian Swimmer. Tokyo Olympics are the thirty second edition of the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games which were initially scheduled in 2020 but the global pandemic Corona got it postponed by a year almost. The rescheduled edition is planned during July 23- August 8. Here are a few things about Sajan Prakash that you may not know about him:
Born & Family
Sajan Prakash was born on September 14, 1993 at Idukki, a city of Tamil Nadu State of India. His mother VJ Shantymol, an employee of NLCIL, is a former national athlete.
About Sajan Prakash’s Career
Sajan Prakash picked Swimming early in his life and joined Neyveli Lignite City Swimming Club at Neyveli, the town where he did his schooling at. Prakash would get a crucial break into national fame in 2015 when he would win 6 gold and 3 Silver medals at the National Games 2015 hosted at Kerala to be the best athlete of the games. A year later, Sajan Prakash was the only male swimmer to enter Rio Olympics.
The Swimmer wouldn’t have a great outing at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. A year later, Sajan would finish at the second pedal of podium in 100m Butterfly at the 2017 Asian Indoor Games; the event was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. A year later was the year of Asian Games and Commonwealth Games which he would participate but wouldn’t win medals at these two mega events.
Sajan Prakash couldn’t fetch any medal at the Rio Olympics but five years later, at the 2021 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, he would become the first ever Indian swimmer to clear the ‘A’ standard of the FINA “A” Olympic qualification time as he would finish with a time of 1:56.38 in the 200 m butterfly event, an Indian National record thus. With this, Sajan Prakash qualified for the Tokyo 2021 Summer Games, first male swimmer to qualify for this edition of Olympic Games. His Coach is S Pradeep Kumar, the Dronacharya Awardee Swimming Coach while he’s managed by Baseline Ventures, and supported by GoSports Foundation. 1. In 2015, Sajan Prakash, with 6 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals, became the best athlete at the 35th National Games.
2. In 2016, Sajan Prakash became the only Indian Male Swimmer to qualify for the Rio Olympics.
3. Sajan Prakash has 10 National, 3 South Asian and 1 Asian records to his name so far.
4. In 2018, became the first Indian Swimmer to qualify for finals of the Asian Games in 200m Butterfly in 32 years.
5. In 2021, Sajan Prakash became the first Indian Swimmer to clear the FINA “A” standard for the Olympic qualification time.
