Athletics Federation of India has announced a team of 22 athletes for the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2017 to be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from 17-27 September 2017.
As per AFI Media’s official press release, the team was selected by the AFI selection committee under the chairmanship of former Olympian G S Randhawa on Wednesday.

The Indian team comprising 13 men and nine women athletes looks to be a good combination of experienced and young athletes who will lead Indian challenge in 9 disciplines.
The criteria for selection of Indian team was athletes’ rankings as on July 5, 2017, at National and International competitions. The selection committee also looked into the performances of some of the athletes at the Inter State Athletics Championships held in Guntur during 15-19 July, 2017.

Then naming the final squad and included Mohan Kumar Raja (Men 400m), Anamika Das (Women Shot Put), Anilda Thomas (Women 400m) and Lily Das (Women 1500m) in the team. The participation of these four athletes in the Games is subject to approval from Olympic Council of Asia and Asian Athletics Association.

At the 2017 edition of the games (AIMAG) there will be 13 disciplines in Athletics which include field events such as long jump, triple jump and high jump. Track events include short, middle and long-distance running and hurdles. Shot Put is the only throw event of the competition.

Earlier there was 2 separate multi-sport events individually for Indoor Games and Martial Arts Games.

The Asian Indoor Games aka AIG (Organized thrice in 2005, 2007, 2009) used to be held every two years while the Asian Martial Arts Games aka AMAG, organized only once in 2009, were supposed to get conducted every four years.
For the first time in 2013 these two major events were merged by Olympic Council of Asia and thus creating the 2nd largest multi-sports events in Asia after Asian Games.
