Today we bring you the Asian Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 1984. The Rothmans Asia Cup was played in April 1984, three matches were played during April 6–13. This was the inaugural edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council which was formed in 1983. Three teams were part of the Asia Cup 1984 viz. India, Pakistan & Sri Lanka. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 1984.
5. Ghulam Parkar (India)
Indian Opening Batsman Ghulam Parker scored 54 runs from the two matches India played in the tournament, against Pakistan & Sri Lanka, with an average of 54 and best score of 32 not out coming against Sri Lanka on April 8 at Sharjah Cricket Ground, the only venue of the tournament. With this run aggregate, Ghulam Ahmed Hasan Mohammed Parkar finished among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1984.
India were chasing a target of 97 and they chased it down without losing any wickets. Earlier Sri Lanka were invited in to bat first by the Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar and the whole of Srilankan team were bowled out for 96. Madan Lal & Chetan Sharma took 3 wickets each while Manoj Prabhakar took 2. Ravi Shastri was the other wicket-taker who took one wicket.
4. Mohsin Khan (Pakistan)
Pakistan’s Opening batsman Mohsin Khan scored 62 runs from the two matches Pakistan played in the tournament, against Sri Lanka & India, with an average of 31 and best score of 35 coming against arch-rivals India on April 13. With this run aggregate, Mohsin Hasan Khan featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1984.
Pakistan were chasing a target of 189 and they couldn’t reach close as they were bowled out for 134. Earlier India won the toss & batted first. They scored 188 with Surinder Khanna scoring 56, Sandeep Patil scoring 43 and the Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar scoring 36 not out. Sarfraz Nawaz, Shahid Mahboob & Mudassar Nazar picked one wicket each. For Pakistan Mohsin top scored while Zaheer Abbas scored 27.
3. Roy Dias
Sri Lanka’s top order batsman Roy Dias scored 62 runs from the two matches Sri Lanka played in the tournament, against Pakistan & India, with an average of 62 and best score of 57 not out coming against Pakistan on April 6. With this run aggregate, Roy Luke Dias featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1984.
Sri Lanka were chasing a target of 188 and they chased it down with 5 wickets remaining. Earlier Sri Lanka won the toss & put Pakistan into bat first. Pakistan scored 187 for 9 with Zaheer Abbas scoring 47, Saadat Ali scoring 30 and Mohsin Khan scoring 27. Arjuna Ranatunga picked 3, Somachandra De Silva picked 2, while Uvais Karnain, Ravi Ratnayeke & Vinothen John picked one each. Arjuna Ranatunga scored 26 runs as well.
2. Zaheer Abbas
Pakistan’s Captain Zaheer Abbas scored 74 runs from the two matches Pakistan played in the tournament, against Sri Lanka & India, with an average of 37 and best score of 47 coming against Sri Lanka on April 6. With this run aggregate, Syed Zaheer Abbas Kirmani featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1984.
Pakistan set a target of 188 for the Sri Lankans which they chased down with 5 wickets intact. Earlier India won the toss & batted first. Mohsin Khan & Saadat Ali scored 27 & 30 respectively.
1. Surinder Khanna
Indian Opening batsman & Wicket-keeper Surinder Khanna scored 107 runs from the two matches India played in the tournament, against Sri Lanka & Pakistan, with an average of 31 and best score of 56 coming against arch-rivals Pakistan in the third match on April 13. With this run aggregate, Surinder Chamanlal Khanna led the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1984.
India set a target of 189 with Khanna’s 56, Ghulam Parker’s 22, Sandeep Patil‘s 43 & Gavaskar’s 36 not out. Pakistan, while chasing, were bowled out for 134. Roger Binny & Ravi Shastri picked 2 wickets each.
