Sakshi Malik, who won historic bronze at the recently concluded Rio 2016 Summer Games in Women Wrestling event, on Sunday, got engaged to her wrestler Satyawart Kadian of Rohtak at her residence in Rohtak. The 24-year-old Olympian-wrestler had earlier openly informed media about Satyawart and how supportive the wrestler is to her career.
The function of engagement was a private one, and was attended by a few people close to the two families as also informed by Satyawart’s father, Satyavan Pehelwan who said, “It was a private function. Only the families of the to-be bride and groom attended the event and it went very well.” Satyavan Pehelwan is also an Arjuna Awardee wrestler who runs his academy (akhada) in Rohtak.
Earlier, Sakshi had hailed Satyawart for supporting her career. “He is very supportive and thinks of my dreams as his own,” she said then. Satyawart, 22, has won his bronze medal at the 2010 Youth Olympics.
Sakshi Malik was conferred the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for her Olympic Bronze performance at the Rio 2016 Summer Games. This year, for the first time in the history of National Sports Awards, four athletes (PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar & Jitu Rai) were chosen for the Khel Ratna honor, owing to the three girls’ superlative show at the Rio Olympics.
