Profile | Bhaichung Bhutia is a former Indian footballer, who has played for the national team of India and represented it internationally from 1995 to 2011. He used to play as a striker of the team and known for his impeccable shooting skills. He was considered the torchbearer of the national team and being called ‘the Sikkimese Sniper’ for his unmatchable expertise in this sport. He often described as the ‘God-gifted player’ by his seniors and measured as a blessing to our country. Bhaichung is the first Indian footballer to sign a contract and play for the European club during his professional days. He started playing football during his school days and played for various local clubs for the state-level championships. He joined East Bengal team in 1993 and began his international career two years later with the Nehru Cup against Thailand. He has lived a glorious career in both club and international fields, which brought him prestigious honors and awards. Currently, he is affiliated with the Sikkim football team and served the United Sikkim team as the Chairman for a couple of years. He once appeared in an Indian reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ and won it, which dragged him to a controversy with this then-associate club Mohun Bagan.
