Profile | Frenkie de Jong has been the talk of the town since he broke into the Ajax first team under Erik ten Hag. Their resurgence in the 2018-19 season, climbing into the top four of the Champions League owes a lot to this Dutch midfielder, who was lapped up by Barcelona at the end of the said season. De Jong’s game is characterized by ball control, keeping control of the ball in midfield, finding final third passes and breaking up opposition attacks. De Jong was primarily deployed by ten Hag as a defensive midfielder in the centre of the park, where he would act as the fulcrum of the team, carrying the ball from defence to attack. He is a specialized ball carrier, with fantastic dribbling and passing abilities. Ajax benefited greatly from his heroics, with van de Beek and the lethal front three getting immense supply from him in play. De Jong has an uncanny ability to read the game, especially from the opposition’s point of view, making him a really important defensive pivot in the midfield. While he doesn’t have the physicality characterized by the defensive midfielders of this decade, his reading of the game keeps him always one step ahead of the game. At Barcelona, he is tipped to be Sergio Busquets’ successor as the Catalan is set to walk into the shadows of retirement soon. The Dutch national team, coached by the legendary Ronald Koeman, has de Jong as one of the primary starters. This is the same team that made the Finals of the UEFA Nations’ Cup last year, were they lost out to Portugal. (As written by Priyansu)
