Profile | Jan Vertonghen came through the youth ranks of Ajax and has become one of the most sought after defenders in modern day football. A key member of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspurs’ at the moment, Jan Vertonghen plays for Roberto Martinez’s Belgium national side. The Belgian had a couple of loan stints in Netherlands, at Willem II and RKC before shining through at the Amsterdam Arena under Ajax coach Marco van Basten. H subsequently played another couple of wonderful seasons under coaches Martin Jol and Frank de Boer, battling through injuries in the process and eventually gaining the envy of multiple European heavyweights in the process, most notably AC Milan. The 2012-13 season became the breakthrough season for Jan Vertonghen, now captain of the Ajax team, who led Ajax to their second title in a row and got rewarded as the “Dutch Footballer of the Year”. He made the move to England and Tottenham Hotspurs, ahead of potential suitors Arsenal and Manchester United. He became a key member of the team when Mauricio Pochettino took over in 2015, pairing him with fellow Belgian Toby Alderweirald in defense. Spurs challenged and chased Leicester all the way in Leicester’s title winning season before their hopes were dashed by Chelsea. Spurs also reached the Finals of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League Final with Vertonghen being named in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season. Jan Vertonghen has been a versatile member of any team he played in, slotting in midfield and defense multiple times for Ajax and then all across the left backline for Tottenham Hotspurs. He is known for his prowess in one-on-one tackles, reading of the game and important goals from set-pieces. (written by Priyansu) |
