Profile | MR Poovamma is a Track & Field athlete from India, who represents her country internationally since 2006. She is an Asian Games gold medalist and specializes in 400 m Sprint. Arjuna awardee Poovamma was born in South India and started her athlete career from her school days. She participated in the World Junior Championship for the very first time in 2006 and repeated this in the next season 2008 as well. In 2007, Poovamma appeared in World Youth Championship and participated in Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008 as well during her junior days. After this, Poovamma entered the senior-level career and competed in a National Sprinting Championship in 2011 held in Kolkata. She won the title in that competition and went for the Asian Grand Prix tournament in the very next year in the 400 M distance event. Then, she competed in World Athletics Championship in 2013 for the 4x400m relay team as a lead runner. In 2014, Poovamma appeared in the Asian Games for the same event and won a gold medal for her country by making a new game record in this category. In 2017, she entered the 2017 Asian Athletics Championship as one of the four in 4x400m team and won the title. She bagged two silver medals in the Asian Championship 2019, one for the mixed 4x400m event and one for women’s 4x400m sprint event.
