Profile | Sumit Malik is an Indian wrestler, who represents India at the international level since 2017. He is a gold medalist and won gold in Commonwealth Games at the 125kg weight category. He is a silver medalist in Asian Games. He took his professional training of wrestling from an early age of 13 at Chhatrasal Stadium. Sumit lost his mother at a very young age and taken by his grandparent to brought up in Delhi. He was inspired by his maternal uncle at that time, who was a wrestler and started taking wrestling training professionally. He began his international wrestling career by participating in 2017 Asian Wrestling Championship. Malik was a runner-up at that tournament and took part in World Wrestling Championship. After this, he went for the 2017 National Wrestling Championship title and won it after defeating top-rated wrestler Hitender. However, he lost to the same person in the Commonwealth Wrestling Champion in 2017 and had to wait 1 more year to win the gold in CWG. In 2018 Commonwealth Games, Malik fulfilled his dream of achieving gold in CWG and won it by defeating Sinvie Boltic in the second walkover. During this match, he was accused of biting his opponent Korey Jarvis to win. However, the Asian Games Silver Medalist took this controversy sportingly and answered it with nice humor by saying that his opponent doesn’t taste like a ‘tandoori chicken’!
