Day 3 at Melbourne Park and the Australian Open 2020 was now well and truly underway. Top seeds cruised through but there were some epic fight backs and few upsets. We look back at the day full of drama, action and intensity.
The Favorites
In the day session the World Number 2 Novak Djokovic breezed through Japanese player Tatsuma Ito. The Serb who had dropped one set in the 1st round finished the job this time in straight sets losing just 7 games in the whole match.
Another strong favorite Roger Federer also scored a 3 set comfortable win against Filip Krajinović of Serbia. Federer dropped just 6 games and cruised to the 3rd round. Greek Star Stefanos Tsitsipas didn’t even require coming to court as his opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber pull out due to injury thus handing the Greek a walkover.
The Challengers
Diego Schwartzman of Argentina who looks in dominant form this week raced past the Spanish opponent Alejandaro Fokina in 3 quick sets. Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka beat British player Dan Evans in another straight-forward 3 sets. Another rising Serb star Dusan Lajovic defeated local boy Marc Polmans in 3 straight sets to go into the 3rd round of the Australian Open.
Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut had to face some resistance from American Michael Mmoh. The 9th seed however overcame the loss of the 1st set and marched to victory in 4 sets thus safely ensuring his place in the 3rd round.
Big serving Canadian Milos Raonic went past Chilean Christian Garin in 3 straight sets. Raonic who struggled with form and fitness in last 2 years seems to be crawling back to his old self. America’s Sam Querrey also registered his 2nd round victory over the Lithuanian player Ricardas Berankis.

Upsets And Epic Matches
There were some intriguing matches as well as some surprising results witnessed on Day 3 at Melbourne Park. Croatia’s Marin Cilic and Frenchman Benoit Paire held a 5 set slugfest that was easily the match of the day. The 2018 runner up Cilic came from behind and won the match in the 5th set tie breaker.
Another wonderful 5 set match saw a strong contender Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov go down against young American star Tommy Paul. The match went to the 5th set tie breaker which Paul won 10 games to 3.
Another American Tennys Sandgren would shine on the day. He defeated the 8th seed Matteo Berrettini in a 5 set thriller. This was one of the most remarkable wins of Sandgren’s career.
An upset of sorts was witness at the Melbourne arena. Local favourite John Millman defeated the in-form Polish star Hubert Hurkacz in 3 straight sets. Millman dominated the match from start to finish leaving a surprised and somewhat out of sorts Hurkacz left with few answers.
The last men’s singles match of the day at Margaret Court arena was also filled with drama and action. Italian Star Fabio Fognini beat Australian Jordan Thompson in 5 sets. The match was intense and hard fought with Fognini taking the 1st and 2nd set. Thompson would then make a strong comeback winning the 3rd and 4th set. The final set reached a tie breaker which the experienced Italian clinched 10 games to 4.
