Bengaluru: Left-arm paceman Jaydev Unadkat became the costliest Indian player and bowler at the IPL auctions when he was roped in by the Rajasthan Royals for a sum of Rs 11 crore on the second day of the mega-event.
Earlier on the Royals had also purchased England all-rounder Ben Stokes for Rs 12.5 crore on the first day. Stokes thus for the second successive auction became the costliest cricketer while Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan was bought back by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping amount of Rs 9 crore. In total, all the eight franchises spent a sum of Rs 4,31,70,00,000 with 169 players being bought.
Also, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane became the first cricketer from Nepal to be picked in the auctions when he was bought by Delhi Daredevils for a sum of Rs. 20 lakh.
Lamichhane, who is 17 years old first had grabbed the eyeballs for his hattrick against Ireland in the U-19 World Cup in 2016 when Nepal qualified for the quarter-finals tournament for the very first time in history.
Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Zadran too became the third cricketer from his country after Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi to be bought at the IPL auction when he was roped in by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 4 crore. Young chinaman bowler Zahir Khan became the fourth Afghan player to be picked when he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 60 lakh.
Other notable purchases included the likes of Chris Gayle, who finally found a team in Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 2 crore.
Andres Tye, who had taken a hattrick while playing for the Gujarat Lions in the previous edition of the IPL too was bought by the Punjab franchise for Rs 7.2 crore.
Only the Chennai Super Kings completed their 25-member squad with maximum funds remaining (Rs. 6,50,00,000). Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians also completed their squads.
Kolkata Knight Riders could only buy 19 players, which is the least among all the franchises after they had spent all their funds. Royal Challengers Bangalore, who had entered the auction with the lowest purse also got 24 players.
