Today we bring you the lowest margin wins in test cricket. 5 days cricket has seen some wonderful clashes between teams, though there’s been many of these tussles ending in a draw, some tame, a few close. But there has been a few of these “could be a draw” changing into win of one of the two opponents. While there’s been matches which got decided when the last wicket was in play, there have been matches where the last few runs decided the results. Here we talk exclusively about the lowest margin wins in test cricket, the wins by runs.

Abu Dhabi Test 2018 (New Zealand won by 4 runs v Pakistan)
In November 2018, New Zealand and Pakistan clashed for a 3 match test series. In the first test at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first. The team couldn’t take much advantage of the decision as they were bowled out for 153. Yasir Shah took 3 while Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali & Mohammad Abbas took 2 wickets each. Kane Williamson (63) was the lone fighter for the Kiwis. Pakistan, in reply, scored 227 with Babar Azam scoring 62. Trent Boult took 4 while de Grandhomme & Ajaz Patel took 2 wickets each.
Trailing by 74 runs in their second innings, New Zealand were supported by 55 by Nicholls & 59 by Watling as they’d score 249. Yasir Shah & Hasan Ali took 5 wickets each. Chasing 176 in the fourth innings, Pakistan were bowled out for 171 despite 65 of Azhar Ali. Ajaz Patel picked 5 while Sodhi & Wagner took 2 wickets each. Melbourne Test 1982 (England won by 3 runs v Australia)
In December 1982, England went on tour to Australia for a 5 match test series. In the fourth test at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia won the toss and put England into bat first. The England team scored 284 with Chris Tavaré’s 89 and Allan Lamb‘s 83. Rodney Hogg & Bruce Yardley took 4 wickets each while Jeff Thomson took remaining 2 wickets. Australia, in reply, scored 287 from their first innings with Kim Hughes (66), David Hookes (53) & Rod Marsh (53) leading the scoring for the Kangaroos. Bob Willis & Geoff Miller took 3 wickets each while Norman Cowans took 2.
Trailing by 3 runs in their second innings, England were supported by 65 by Graeme Fowler & 46 by Ian Botham as they’d score 294. Rodney Hogg & Jeff Thomson took 3 wickets each while Geoff Lawson took 4. Chasing 292 in the fourth innings, Australia were bowled out for 288 despite 68 of David Hookes and 62 not out of Allan Border. Norman Cowans picked 6 while Ian Botham took 2 wickets. Cowans was adjudged player of the match for his 8 wickets in the match. This win by 3 runs got recorded among the lowest margin wins in test cricket, the wins by runs.
Old Trafford Test 1902 (Australia won by 3 runs v England)
In July 1902, Australia went on a tour to England for a 5 match test series. In the fourth test at Old Trafford, Manchester, Australia won the toss and decided to bat first. The team would go on to score 299 runs from this innings with Victor Trumper (104), Clem Hill (65), Reggie Duff (54) & Joe Darling (51). Bill Lockwood took 6 wickets while Wilfred Rhodes took 4 wickets. Hosts England, in reply, scored 262 with Stanley Jackson scoring 128 & Len Braund scoring 65. Hugh Trumble took 4 while Jack Saunders took 3 wickets.
Leading by 37 runs in their second innings, Australia were bowled out for 86 with Bill Lockwood taking 5 wickets and Wilfred Rhodes taking 3. Chasing 124 in the fourth innings, England were bowled out for 120 conceding a 3 runs wins to Australia. Hugh Trumble picked 6 while Jack Saunders took 3 wickets. Edgbaston Test 2005 (England won by 2 runs v Australia)
In August 2005, Ricky Ponting led Australia went on a tour of England and Scotland. In the second test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Australia won the toss and put opponents into bat first. The hosts scored 407 in the innings with Marcus Trescothick (90), Kevin Pietersen (71) & Andrew Flintoff (68) doing bulk of scoring. Shane Warne took 4 while Michael Kasprowicz took 3 wickets. Australia, in reply, were bowled out for 308 with Justin Langer scoring 82 & Ricky Ponting scoring 1. Flintoff & Ashley Giles took 3 wickets each.
Leading by 99 runs in their second innings, England were bowled out for 182 despite 73 by Andrew Flintoff. Shane Warne took 6 wickets while Brett Lee took 4. Chasing 282 in the fourth innings, Australia were bowled out for 279. Andrew Flintoff picked 4 while Steve Harmison & Ashley Giles took 2 wickets each. Andrew Flintoff was adjudged player of the match for his all-round performance in the match. This win by 2 runs is listed among the lowest margin wins in test cricket, the wins by runs.
Adelaide Test 1993 (West Indies won by 1 run v Australia)
In January 1993, Richie Richardson led West Indies went on a tour of Australia for a 5 match test series. In the fourth test at Adelaide Oval, West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first. The team couldn’t take much advantage of the decision as they were bowled out for 252 with only Brian Lara scoring a 50 plus score (52). Merv Hughes took 5 while Tim May took 2 wickets. Australia, in reply, scored 213 with Curtly Ambrose taking 6 & Carl Hooper taking 2 wickets.
Leading by 39 runs in their second innings, West Indies were supported by 72 by Richie Richardson as they’d score 146. Tim May took 5 wickets while Craig McDermott took 3. Chasing 186 in the fourth innings, Australia were bowled out for 184 despite 54 of Justin Langer. Curtly Ambrose picked 4 while Courtney Walsh took 3 wickets. Curtly Ambrose was adjudged player of the match for his 10 wickets in the match. This win by 1 run is listed among the lowest margin wins in test cricket, the wins by runs.
