Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 1995. The Pepsi Asia Cup was played during April 5–14, 1995; 7 matches were played in the tournament. This was the fifth edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council and the edition was hosted by United Arab Emirate. Four teams were part of the Asia Cup 1995 viz. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Sri Lanka. India won their 4th title at the tournament & Anil Kumble led the wickets table. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 1995.
5. Manoj Prabhakar (India)
Indian Batsman Manoj Prabhakar scored 122 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 40.66 and best score of 60 coming against Sri Lanka on April 9 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. His runs would include two half-centuries and with this run aggregate, Prabhakar featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1995. In his best individual score innings’ match, Sri Lanka had batted first and they scored 202/9 from their 50 overs with Hashan Tillakaratne‘s 48. Venkatesh Prasad took 3 wickets, Javagal Srinath took 2 wickets while Prabhakar & Anil Kumble took one wicket each. India chased down the target within 35 overs with 8 wickets remaining as Sachin Tendulkar scored 112 not out & Prabhakar scored 60.
4. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s Left handed Opener Sanath Jayasuriya scored 134 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 33.50 and best score of 51 coming against Bangladesh on April 6. With this run aggregate, Jayasuriya featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1995. This was the only fifty Jayasuriya scored in the tournament.
In his highest score innings match, Sri Lanka had batted first and were bowled out for 233 despite Sanath’s 51 & 71 from Arjuna Ranatunga. Saiful Islam took 4 wickets. Bangladesh, in reply, were bowled out for 126. Muttiah Muralitharan took 4 wickets, Janak Gamage took 2, while Chaminda Vaas, Sanath Jayasuriya & Ruwan Kalpage took one wicket each.
3. Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan)
Pakistan Middle-order Batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq scored 190 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 95 and best score of 88 coming against arch-rivals India on April 7. With this run aggregate, Inzamam featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1995. Inzamam scored two fifties in the tournament. In his highest score innings match, Pakistan had batted first and scored 266/9 from their overs with Inzamam’s 88 & Wasim Akram’s 50. Anil Kumble & Utpal Chatterjee took 2 wickets each. India, in reply, were bowled out for 169. Aaqib Javed took 5 while Aamer Sohail took 2 wickets.
2. Navjot Sidhu (India)
Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu scored 197 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 98.50 and best score of 84 not out coming against Sri Lanka on April 14. With this run aggregate, Navjot Sidhu featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1995. His runs would include three fifties. In his best score innings, Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 230/7 from their overs with Asanka Gurusinha’s 85. Venkatesh Prasad & Anil Kumble took 2 wickets each. India won the match within 45 wickets with 8 wickets remaining. Navjot Sidhu & Mohammad Azharuddin both scored unbeaten half centuries to guide the team to the target.
1. Sachin Tendulkar (India)
Indian Legend and opening batsman Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar scored 205 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 68.33 and best score of 112 not out coming against Sri Lanka on April 9 in a successful chase in the fifth match of this tournament. With this run aggregate, Sachin Tendulkar led the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1995. In his best innings match, India chased down 203 run target with 8 wickets intact and more than 15 overs remaining. His 112 not out was not only his only century in the Asia Cup 1995, but also the only century in the tournament by any batsman.
These were the top scorers in the 5th edition of the Asia Cup, in 1995, the ones who made the list of most runs in Asia Cup 1995. It was a round robin format tournament at group stage with the four teams playing against one another and then the top 2 would go to tournament final to fight out for the trophy.
