Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 2000. The Pepsi Asia Cup was played in May- June, 2000, 7 matches were played during May 29- June 7, 2000. This was the seventh edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council and was hosted by Bangladesh. four teams were part of the Asia Cup 2000 viz. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Sri Lanka. Pakistan won their 1st title at the tournament & Abdul Razzaq led the wickets table. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 2000.
5. Sourav Ganguly (India)
Indian Captain & opening batsman Sourav Ganguly scored 156 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 78 and best score of 135 not out coming against Bangladesh on May 30. His runs would include a hundred and with this run aggregate, Ganguly featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 2000. Apparently, his highest score was also the highest individual score in the tournament edition. Ganguly was the only centurion for the Indian team in the tournament.
In his best innings score match, Bangladesh had batted first and they scored 249/6 with Habibul Bashar’s 57 & Akram Khan’s 64. Thirunavukkarasu Kumaran took 3 wickets while Sachin Tendulkar took 2 and Ajit Agarkar took 1. India chased down the target with 8 wickets and almost 10 overs remaining. Apart from Sourav’s innings, Mohammad Azharuddin scored 35 not out.
4. Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan)
Pakistan middle order batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq scored 175 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 87.50 and best score of 75 not out coming against Bangladesh on June 2 at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka. His runs would include two half-centuries and with this run aggregate, Inzamam featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 2000.
In his best individual score innings’ match, Pakistan had batted first and they scored 320/3 from their 50 overs Imran Nazir & Yousuf Youhana scoring 80-each and Shahid Afridi scoring 45 not out. Bangladesh, in reply, were bowled out for 87. Abdul Razzaq (3), Azhar Mahmood (2), Mohammad Akram (1), Wasim Akram (1) & Arshad Khan (1) were the wicket-takers.
3. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s left handed opening batsman Sanath Jayasuriya scored 183 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 45.75 and best score of 105 coming against India on June 1. With this run aggregate, Jayasuriya featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 2000. This was the only hundred Jayasuriya scored in the tournament.
In his highest score innings match, Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 276/8 from their overs with century from Sanath and 42 from Marvan Atapattu. Ajit Agarkar & Sachin Tendulkar took 2 wickets each while Thirunavukkarasu Kumaran & Nikhil Chopra took one apiece. India, in reply, were bowled out for 205 despite Sachin’s 93. Kaushalya Weeraratne (3), Nuwan Zoysa (2), Chaminda Vaas (1), Muttiah Muralitharan (1) & Sanath Jayasuriya (1) were the wicket-takers for Sri Lanka.
2. Marvan Atapattu (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s right handed top order batsman Marvan Atapattu scored 245 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 81.66 and best score of 100 coming against Pakistan on June 7. With this run aggregate, Marvan Samson Atapattu featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 2000. His runs would include a hundred and a fifty.
In his best score innings, Pakistan had batted first and scored 277/4 from their overs with Saeed Anwar’s 82, Inzamam-ul-Haq’s 72 not out & Moin Khan’s 56 not out. Nuwan Zoysa took 2 wickets for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, in reply, were bowled out for 238 despite Marvan Atapattu’s 100 & Russel Arnold’s 41.
1. Yousuf Youhana (Pakistan)
Pakistan‘s middle order batsman Yousuf Youhana (later changed his name to Mohammad Yousuf) scored 295 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an outstanding average of 147.50 and best score of 100 not out coming against arch-rivals India on June 3. With this run aggregate, Yousuf led the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 2000. Batting first in his highest score innings, Pakistan made 295/7 with his score and Moin Khan’s 46. Anil Kumble took 3 while Ajit Agarkar & Amit Bhandari took 2 wickets each. India, in reply, were bowled out for 251 despite Ajay Jadeja‘s 93. Abdul Razzaq took four wickets.
These were the top scorers in the 7th edition of the Asia Cup, in 2000, the ones who made the list of most runs in Asia Cup 2000. It was a round robin format tournament at group stage with the four teams playing against one another and then the top 2 would go to tournament final.
