Kolkata: The English Premier League is one of the most competitive league across the world and Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Keane are two of it’s long serving heroes. The title race may be different this year, with a phenomenal Manchester City led by coach Pep Guardiola, eight points clear of second and third placed United and Tottenham Hotspur. But former Spurs player Robbie Keane believes that “Tottenham need some sort of a cup in the next two years, to give them some momentum.”
The Irish legend has made a total of 306 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 122 goals and talking of his former club’s chances in the EPL as well as in the Champions League, the ATK captain said, “At this point of time, Manchester City are very, very strong. I think Tottenham needs to win some trophy to gain some momentum for the future. If they (Spurs) manage to keep this team together, it’s a fantastic club and I have some great memories of the club. It will be great to see them win something in the future.”
The North London club has been on a great run in recent times finishing regularly inside the top five since 2014. The appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, a former Argentine defender has transformed the club into one of the most balanced team in England, which saw them finish in the top two last season. The run has continued this season and Tottenham sit third on the EPL table, equal on points with Man United but below on goal-difference.
Their sweet run has not only been limited to the domestic League but has moved ashore even into the European Champions League and they are yet to lose a game in the tournament. They thrashed last season’s winners Real Madrid 3-1 at home having earlier held them to a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
Co-incidently current ATK coach Teddy Sheringham was a teammate of the Irish Robbie at White Hart Lane and the 1994 Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Year, echoed on the same line. Terming themselves (Teddy and Robbie) unfortunate for being able to lead the club to title glory he said, “It’s a fantastic club and I have been very impressed with Pochettino’s work in
the past three seasons. He has developed Tottenham into a very very formidable club which is getting better every year. Hopefully, they can do better than last year, when they came second. Yes, City are phenomenal at the moment but things change very quickly in football and Spurs will be hard on their heels throughout the season.”
The manager’s faith in the club’s academy players such as Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Tom Carroll and Josh Onomah and at the same time purchasing young players such as Dele Alli, Son Heung-minand Lamela has transformed the club into an English powerhouse and with the best wishes of two of it’s former players, Tottenham will surely look to take a step more and add the elusive title to their empty cabinet.
