It was another action packed day at Melbourne Park as the Australian Open progressed. Day 6 saw usual seeds get through even though there were a few upsets. Let’s look back at this eventful day in both men’s and women’s arena of the Australian Open.
The Favorites
Rafael Nadal was up and running against his fellow countryman Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spaniard progressed to the 4th round without the loss of a single set. He defeated Carreno Busta losing just 7 games in the process. Another strong favorite Daniil Medvedev also put up a dominant show winning against the Australia’s Alex Popyrin in 3 straight sets.
The World Number 5 Dominic Thiem of Austria faced some resistance from the American star Taylor Fritz. The Austrian however put up a determined performance and won the match in 4 sets. German star Alexander Zverev got past the tricky opponent Fernando Verdasco of Spain without the loss of a set. The German who is ranked World Number 8 currently seems to have put his 2019 lows behind and is cruising back to form as the championship is progressing.
In the women’s section the World Number 3 Simona Halep of Romania beat Yulia Putinseva of Kazakhstan in 2 dominant sets. Germany’s Angelique Kerber beat Italy’s Camila Giorgi in a match lasting 3 tight sets. Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza also had a smooth passage against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina winning in 2 straight sets.

The Challengers
Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland also had a relatively easy journey to the 4th round as his opponent John Isner of United States retired midway in the match. Andrey Rublev of Russia and David Goffin of Belgium were involved in a 4 set titanic contest. The Russian youngster however came through and won the match thus booking his spot in the 4th round.
Frenchman Gael Monfils beat Latvian Ernests Gulbis and thus booked his spot in the round of 16. The match of the day was contested between Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Russia’s Karen Khachanov. The Australian took the 1st and 2nd set before the Russian came back to win the 3rd and 4th set. The final set was tightly contested and went to the super tie breaker. Kyrgios with his newly found motivation kept his nerve and clinched the tie breaker 10 games to 8.
In the Women’s draw Swiss star Belinda Bencic was handed a crushing defeat by Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. The Swiss won just 1 game in the whole match and also got a bagel in the 1st set. In another massive upset the WTA World Number 2 Karolína Plíšková was beaten by Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in 2 tight sets with both going to the tie breakers.
